I have a SharePoint question that has been driving me nuts. I am trying to link up a Word template I have so that the version number SharePoint assigns upon check-in (I have versioning on and I am using major and minor numbering) shows up in the Document Properties (Office Button > Prepare > Properties), Version within the document (I have added this column from existing site columns and inserted the Document Property into the template on the cover page). As of now, I can get Title to work so that it writes both ways, but Version doesn’t work. Here is an article that follows what I am trying to do: http://www.sharepointblogs.com/agoo...ments.aspx

Has anybody figured out this problem and documented their process anywhere?

Hi Mark,

Have you tried using labels as part of the information policies settings per content type? Try the following.....

1. Create a document library and enable versioning (Either major or minor) and content types.
2. Add any new metadata fields to the library as required.
3. Add your content types.
4. Go into document library settings and select the first of your content types.
5. Select Information management policies settings from the content type menu.
6. Select define a policy and click ok.
7. Click on the 'Enable Label' Check box
8. DO NOT Check the other two boxes in the Labels section.
9. In the Lable Format field, enter the metadata fields in the following format...

Reference : {Reference} \n Version : {Version} \n Classification : {Classification} \n Custodian : {Custodian}

10. Set the label appearence and click on preview.
11. Click ok at the bottom of the page.

The next steps relate to Word 2007....

12. Go back to the library and create a new document using the content type you have modifed. The document should open in word
13. IMPORTANT : Save the file as a Word 2007 format now.
14. Select the insert tab
15. Select Quick Parts from the Ribbon menu and hover over document property
16. Select Label from the properties list
17. This should display the metadata defined in your label as a field in your word document. The field will update automatically when you next open the document.
18. Don't forget to save!

Finished

Jthomson - your suggestion worked for me, however it seems to have caused another problem which I can't nail down.  I followed your steps, putting only {Version} in the Label Format field and was able to create a Word document which displays the correct SharePoint-assigned version whenever it is opened.  The problem is that, somehow, the association of the Word doc with SharePoint is being lost.  My Doc Lib forces check out and versioning, and when I first save a document with the Version being dynamically displayed, and then close the document, I am prompted to check it back in.  Then, I'm able to check it out and back in one more time without a problem.  But the next time I check it out, when I close the file, it just closes - I am not prompted to check it back in, and SharePoint no longer recognizes the file on my local machine (in the SharePoint Drafts folder where SharePoint put it) as the file in question.  When I go to SharePoint to open the file again (which is still checked out because it didn't prompt me to check it back in), I get this message in Word:
A copy of this file is checked out on another machine.  The server copy may not contain your latest changes.  Would you like to discard your check out before opening the server copy?

 Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Thanks.
